Whenever I make a decision about something new, like a work project or even just how I should spend my afternoon, I always ask myself this question: “Is it exciting?”
I want to make sure that I am not just doing something because it makes sense, but because it will lift me up and make me feel good?
All too often, we do things because they are part of a routine or a habit. And that is rarely a source of excitement.
I’ll give you an example. Last Saturday, I was sitting in my hotel room looking out the window into a gloomy afternoon. A thunderstorm had just rolled in and it was raining like crazy.
Ordinarily, I would stay inside and wait it out. This time, though, I felt excited about the storm and suddenly this thought came to me: “What would a child do?”
And the answer was clear. A child would run out into the rain and enjoy it as much as possible.
I decided to act on it. I put on my jogging pants and shoes and ran out.
It was one of the most exhilarating experiences of the past months and it made me feel alive.
When I came back to the room, I was wet, but happy.
Savor these opportunities life offers you!
Do what excites you and allow yourself to enjoy it.
