The Momentum Principle

You may have noticed this in your life. Sometimes, when things get out of hand, they really get out of hand.

There is even an expression for it: “When it rains, it pours.”

Conversely, you may have had experiences where a string of good things happened to you in a short amount of time. A “lucky streak”.

Both of these phenomena are based on the same principle: momentum.

This means you have built up a strong energy – positive or negative – and, eventually, this energy build-up culminated in a string of events you witnessed in your life.

Now that you know about it, you can use this principle to create more of these lucky streaks.

You do this by focusing a lot of positive thought and emotion on a specific subject, or even a general one.

For example, you could say to yourself, “Things have been going really well for me and they are getting better and better.” That’s very general.

Or you could say, “I am getting closer and closer to my goal of losing 20 lbs.” That’s pretty specific.

Of course, this works the other way around, too.

If you keep repeating negative thoughts about something that bothers you, you are going to make things worse.

Therefore, it is critical to “nip it in the bud” before things get out of hand.

You know that’s about to happen when you feel a lot of strong negative emotion building up inside you. Anger, resentment, frustration. That kind of thing.

Maybe small negative things have already begun to manifest in your life.

Maybe you dropped a plate in the kitchen or you broke an appliance.

These are strong indicators that it is high time to reverse course.

You do that by stopping the bad thoughts. If the negative momentum is strong already, you may not be able to stop it completely. In this case, you have to start by toning it down

For example, instead of thinking, “Everything is getting out of hand,” you could think, “Although it’s been rough, things will get better again. They always have in the past.”

That softens the negative energy and slows down the momentum.

Then, step by step, begin introducing better-feeling thoughts like, “I can see light at the end of the tunnel now and things are already picking up.”

Notice the relief you feel when you think this thought. That’s what we’re going for.

As you gradually rebuild positive momentum, the manifestations in your life will improve again.

And if you keep it up, your next lucky streak is just around the corner.
